Geneticist

A medical geneticist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary diseases and genetic disorders.

In oncology – particularly at the National Medical Research Radiological Centre of the Ministry of Health of Russian Federation medical geneticist performs important tasks that help in the treatment and support of patients with a history of cancer. The key responsibilities of a geneticist in this field may include:

• Genetic counselling. Assessing family history and genetic risk factors to determine the likelihood of cancer development in a patient and their relatives.
• Genetic testing. Conducting tests to identify hereditary mutations associated with an increased risk of cancer (for example, BRCA1 and BRCA2 for breast and ovarian cancer).
• Developing individualized treatment plans. Using genetic information to select the most effective treatment methods, including targeted therapy.
• Participation in clinical trials. Geneticists may take part in studies of new treatment approaches based on the genetic profiles of tumors.
• Fertility preservation program. Geneticists can counsel patients undergoing cancer treatment on options for preserving fertility. This may involve:

• • assessing the condition of the reproductive system;
  • discussing methods such as cryopreservation of eggs or sperm before starting treatment;
  • providing information about the risks and benefits of various fertility preservation methods.

Genetic counselling not only supports diagnosis and treatment but also helps improve patients’ quality of life by enabling them to make informed decisions about their health and future.
