Virologist

In modern medicine, the role of a virologist goes far beyond the classical work with infections. Their contribution is particularly significant in the treatment of patients with severe diseases — including oncological ones — where viral agents can affect the course of the disease, the effectiveness of therapy and the risks of complications. At the National Medical Research Radiological Centre of the Ministry of Health of Russian Federation, the virologist becomes an important link in a multidisciplinary team that brings together oncologists, urologists, radiologists, geneticists and other specialists.

Why a virologist is important in an oncology center

Oncological diseases and viral infections often intersect: some viruses can provoke tumor development, while others can complicate treatment due to the patient’s weakened immune system. The virologist at the National Medical Research Radiological Centre of the Ministry of Health of Russian Federation helps to:

  • identify hidden viral processes that may affect the prognosis and treatment strategy;
  • assess the risks of virus reactivation during chemotherapy, radiotherapy or immunotherapy;
  • select a safe patient management strategy taking into account the viral status;
  • prevent complications associated with viral infections, thereby preserving the possibility of continuing the main treatment.

Comprehensive diagnostics: precision at every stage

To achieve the most accurate assessment of the viral load and the nature of the infection, the Centre’s specialists use a wide range of modern methods:

  • immunohistochemical studies — to determine the presence of viral markers directly in the tissues;
  • molecular genetic tests — to detect viral DNA or RNA, including low‑copy forms that are difficult to identify using other methods;
  • serological analyses — to assess the body’s immune response to a viral infection;
  • cytological and pathomorphological studies — combined with virological data, they allow us to see how the virus affects cells and tissues.

Thanks to its status as a federal reference center, the NMRRC applies not only standard protocols but also remote expert consultations: complex cases are discussed with leading specialists, and research results are verified using the strictest criteria.

The work of a virologist is closely linked to the Centre’s high‑tech treatment methods

  • Radiotherapy using the CyberKnife and Protonic systems — requires a thorough assessment of the patient’s general condition, including the absence of an active viral infection, which could increase the radiation burden on the body.
  • Endovascular X‑ray surgery and the delivery of radiopharmaceuticals — the effectiveness and safety of these methods largely depend on a stable immune system, which the virologist evaluates.
  • Transplantation of organs of the genitourinary system with hemodialysis support (at the branch of the N.  Lopatkin Scientific Research Institute of Urology and Interventional Radiology) — here, the control of viral infections is critically important, since immunosuppressive therapy after transplantation increases the risks of viral complications.

The virologists at the National Medical Research Radiological Centre do not just follow the protocols — they participate in developing their own approaches to diagnostics and treatment, relying on global experience and their own research. Continuous professional development, participation in research projects and the introduction of innovative techniques allow them to offer patients solutions that take into account all the nuances of their condition.

An individualized care pathway for each patient is built taking into account not only the main diagnosis but also the viral background, concomitant infections and the characteristics of the immune system. This comprehensive approach helps not only to fight the oncological disease but also to preserve the quality of life by minimizing risks and complications.
