Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Group
The group of tumors of bones and soft tissues of the P. Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Institute (MORI) – a branch of the FSBI «NMRRC» of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation is a leader in Russian oncology in the reconstruction of the acetabulum and hip joint, with a tumor lesion of the pelvic bones.

- Oncological endoprosthetics
- Reconstruction instead of amputation
- Bone tumor biopsy
- CHI, VMP, patients from all regions of the Russian Federation
The main activities of the Group of tumors of bones and soft tissues of the P. Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Institute (MORI) – branch of the FSBI «NMRRC» of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation
Oncological endoprosthetics
Joint replacement in the treatment of malignant diseases is the “gold” standard of organ-preserving treatment of patients with a tumor lesion of bones, both in primary tumors – sarcomas and metastatic lesions. The Department of Oncological Orthopedics of the P. Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Institute (MORI), a branch of the FSBI «NMRRC» of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, performs operations on oncoendoprosthetics of all large joints of the body, including the ankle and wrist. Modern models of modular endoprostheses are used for endoprosthesis, which allow the most accurate restoration of the bone and joint fragment to be removed. Up to 60 oncoendoprosthetics operations are performed in the department per year.
Spinal surgery
Damage to the bones of the spine by malignant diseases is often accompanied by severe pain syndrome, and in severe and especially severe cases can lead to profound disability with lack of movement and sensitivity in the lower and upper extremities, chaining the patient to a wheelchair. The Department of Oncological Orthopedics of the P. Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Institute (MORI), a branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “NMIC of Radiology” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, performs the entire range of extended and minimally invasive (vertebroplasty) surgical interventions for patients with a tumor lesion of the spine. During their work, the staff of the department relieved pain and disability from more than 1,000 patients with a tumor lesion of the spinal column.
Tumors of the pelvic bones
Patients with a tumor lesion of the pelvic bones represent a special group of patients who are more often unable to be helped in general hospitals. Considering that pelvic bone tumors are very rare and do not exceed 0.05% of all tumor pathologies, only a small number of specialized centers in the world can adequately help this category of patients. The priority direction of the Department of Oncological Orthopedics of the P. Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Institute (MORI) branch of the FSBI «NMRRC» of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation is to perform organ-preserving treatment for most patients with tumor pathology of bones and pelvic ring, in particular. Today, the department is the leader in Russia in performing modular arthroplasty of the acetabulum in case of pelvic ring tumor lesion. This modern but sophisticated technique allows the patient to keep the lower limb on the affected side and gives the opportunity to move independently.
Soft tissue sarcomas, skin tumors
Soft tissue sarcoma – this is a very dangerous and dangerous disease, with improper treatment of which, most patients die from the progression of the disease. It is strictly forbidden to remove any soft tissue formation without prior morphological examination of soft tissue tumor biopsies.
Skin tumors: melanoma, squamous cell and basal cell carcinoma, Merkel carcinoma. With an extensive spread of the tumor, various plastic surgery options are performed. The performed biopsy of the “sentinel” lymph node makes it possible to identify metastatic lesion of regional lymph nodes at an early stage. With metastases from the lymph nodes, extensive lymphadenectomies are performed.
In the Group of tumors of bones and soft tissues of the P. Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Institute (MORI), a branch of the FSBI «NMRRC» of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, enormous experience has been accumulated in treating patients with malignant tumors of the skin and soft tissues, diagnostics, examination and treatment of all types of diseases of this localization are carried out.
Treatment programs

- Pelvic bone resections with reconstruction.
- Modular pelvic ring replacement.
- Rib and chest wall resections.

- Removal of tumors localized on the extremities.
- Removal of tumors localized on the chest wall.
- The use of all plastic surgery options after removal of the tumor.
- Decompressive operations on the spine (allow to relieve the patient from pain syndrome or reduce its intensity, as well as to avoid disability and movement in a wheelchair).
- Endoprosthesis of vertebrae.
- Vertebroplasty.
- Oncological endoprosthetics.
- Removal of all types of skin tumors (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, Merkel cancer, skin melanoma).
- All types of regional lymph node removal (lymphadenectomy).
- Various plastic surgery options for massive skin tumors.
Recommendations to patients
You can make an appointment for a consultation with the staff of the department by calling the call center +7 (495) 150 11 22. For the consultation, please take copies of all previous studies and statements if you have previously been treated. In addition to the conclusions of the conducted research, take illustrative material with you: X-rays, research recordings on CD discs. If you have glasses and blocks of morphological preparations on your hands, that is, fragments of the tumor after a biopsy or after its removal, then they must also be taken with you. If you have been treated for a long time and you have a fairly large package of documents, then before the consultation, try to arrange them in chronological order and remember for yourself what kind of treatment, when and in which hospital you were treated. All this information will help to reduce the time and volume of possible follow-up, quickly diagnose and develop a treatment plan.
About the Group of tumors of bones and soft tissues of the P. Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Institute (MORI) – branch of the FSBI «NMRRC» of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation
Modern oncological orthopedics is an interdisciplinary specialty of modern oncology that develops the principles of diagnosis and treatment of primary locally widespread and disseminated malignant tumors of bones, soft tissues and skin, as well as metastatic lesions of the musculoskeletal system. Oncological orthopedics, which arose and developed at the junction of many specialties and in close relationship with them, is one of the young specialties in oncology. The development of combined and integrated approaches in the treatment of oncological processes, the emergence of new chemotherapy drugs and the development of the most effective combinations, as well as the emergence of new implants and bioengineered structures, allow in the vast majority of cases to perform organ-preserving operations, maintaining a high quality of life for patients, without losing the effectiveness of the main treatment. Various options for endoprosthetics, reconstructive plastic surgery, minimally invasive interventions make it possible to effectively treat patients who were previously considered hopeless. Complex and multifaceted treatment of malignant tumors of the musculoskeletal system in compliance with all necessary principles is possible only in multidisciplinary oncological institutions with extensive experience in the treatment of these diseases, united by the term orthopedic oncology. The Department of Oncological Orthopedics of the P. Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Institute (MORI) – a branch of the FSBI «NMRRC» of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, opened in 2005, has all the necessary modern materials, medicines, tools, as well as highly professional personnel. All types of surgical interventions are performed in the department for primary and metastatic lesions of the musculoskeletal system, combined treatment of patients with primary, recurrent and metastatic tumors of bones, soft tissues and skin is carried out.
