The Center has a high scientific potential. The main directions of the Center’s work are:

  • development of methods for early detection of tumors of various organs and systems, clarification of the extent of the spread of the tumor process and differential diagnosis;
  • development of new organ-preserving and functional-sparing surgical treatment techniques;
  • improvement of combined and complex treatment;
  • creation of new dosage forms of prolonged-acting anticancer drugs and detoxification therapy drugs;
  • medical and social and labor rehabilitation of patients with malignant tumors after radical treatment;
  • radiation and radioisotope diagnostics are high—tech medical imaging methods aimed at timely detection of tumor pathology, assessment of its prevalence and control after treatment.

Within the walls of the Center, a whole galaxy of scientists have been brought up who are engaged in fundamental developments and their application in practice, the creation of new antitumor drugs in the treatment of oncological diseases.

Since 2014, various scientific conferences have been held on the basis of the center. NMIC Radiology also provides various educational services in the field of medicine.

Over the past few years, the NMIC of Radiology of the Ministry of Health of Russia has developed and, in cooperation with the FMBA of Russia, has passed preclinical tests of the radiopharmaceutical “MCA 5-10 microns, 188Re”, which is even more advanced than the colloidal gold –198 preparation, which makes the method of radionuclide treatment of chronic knee synovitis (radiosynovectomy) using radiopharmaceutical (RFLP) containing the radioisotope rhenium – 188 (188Re) is extremely promising, both from a scientific and clinical point of view.

The Center actively cooperates with the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and other research institutes, corporations, research and production associations in the Russian Federation. One of the significant results of the cooperation was the creation of the Russian proton complex “Prometheus”, Russian radioisotope pharmaceuticals.

By an order of the Government of the Russian Federation dated October 25, 2017, a group of scientists from the National Medical Research Center of Radiology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation headed by the Director General, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.D. Kaprin was awarded the 2017 Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology “For the development, production and introduction of domestic radio sources (Iodine-125) for contact radiation therapy (brachytherapy) in oncology”.

A CryoBank of genetic material of oncological patients has been created on the basis of the A.F. Tsyba MRSC, a branch of the NMIC of Radiology. The Center collects sperm, ovarian tissue, eggs, embryos, as well as cryopreservation and storage of patients’ genetic material under special conditions. In addition, the blood of sick patients and their blood relatives is collected and stored, followed by DNA analysis for oncomutation. To date, there are 2,900 samples of genetic material in the biobank of the Center. After treatment, future parents can contact the Center, where the IVF procedure takes place and the future mother and baby are monitored.

In January 2021, thanks to the efforts of the NMIC Radiology team led by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.D. Kaprin, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences S.A. Ivanov and Professor M.V. Kiseleva, amendments were made to the Order of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation No. 803n “On the procedure for the use of assisted reproductive technologies, contraindications and restrictions to their use”, where for the first time on a legal basis the possibilities of cryopreservation of genetic material and preservation of fertility of cancer patients before chemo and radiation therapy are fixed.

In 2021, the center opened a new method of breast cancer treatment — brachytherapy.
