The Department of Radiation Biochemistry conducts fundamental and applied research in the field of experimental and clinical radiation biology and oncology at the molecular, subcellular, and cellular levels, including the following areas:

  • Identification of patterns of radiation-induced damage in normal and tumor cells of humans and animals, and development of means and methods to modify radiosensitivity based on these findings;
  • Investigation of the biochemical and molecular-biological mechanisms of cellular responses to damage in the short and long term after radiation exposure, including exposure to low doses;
  • Development of new approaches and methods of personalized medicine necessary for assessing the effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation at the molecular and cellular levels;
  • Development of biological (including molecular-genetic and virological) criteria for evaluating tumor processes to predict the effectiveness of radiation and combined treatment in cancer patients.

The scientific activity of the Laboratory of Radiation Biochemistry includes:

  • Studying the molecular factors of cell resistance to radiation, chemical, and combined effects;
  • Studying the biochemical mechanisms of normal and tumor cell death;
  • Developing methods for radiosensitization of tumor cells.

The scientific activities of the post-radiation recovery laboratory include:

  • Identifying the patterns and mechanisms of somatic mutagenesis (at the gene level) in cancer patients and individuals exposed to various types of radiation, as a basis for developing new methods in molecular epidemiology;
  • Studying the radiobiological properties of tumor stem cells and searching for means of targeted impact on them;
  • Investigating the mechanisms of photodynamic effects on tumor cells in experimental and clinical settings;
  • Developing methods for assessing and predicting the individual response of tumor and normal cells to radiation, combined, and targeted treatments of malignant neoplasms.

The scientific activities of the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Radiobiology include:

  • Experimental and clinical studies of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of oxidative stress and its role in the biological effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation;
  • Investigation of DNA, chromatin, and biological membrane damage, and the development of new approaches to radiomodification;
  • Analysis of gene polymorphisms as a factor of individual sensitivity to genotoxic effects, including anticancer therapy, and the development of new predictive biomarkers for radiation oncology and methods for assessing carcinogenic risk in molecular epidemiology.
