ADIOR CIS and Eurasia – a friendship tested over the years

The opening of the XIII CIS and Eurasian Congress of Oncologists and Radiologists, was held on 27th April 2022 in the Media Centre of the International News Agency “Russia Today”. The Association of Directors of Institutes of Oncology and Radiology of CIS and Eurasia (ADIOR CIS and Eurasia) holds a large-scale Congress every two years in one of the cities of the member countries. This year, Kazakhstan was the organizer of the Congress, and the country’s chief oncologist, Dilara Kaidarova, fulfilled the honorary role of President of the Congress. The event was a landmark event for Russia as well – Prof.Andrei Kaprin, Chief Oncologist of the Russian Ministry of Health, was unanimously re-elected for a second term as President of the CIS ADIOR and the EA.

This year, the importance of the Congress was particularly emphasized by participants of the international union. “We cannot be divided by borders, we have no language barriers, we have a common task – the fight against cancer”, noted leaders of CIS cancer services, representatives of the World Health Organization and heads of major medical institutions of the member countries in their welcoming speeches. The significance of the event is emphasized at the highest level. Thus, in his welcoming address to the Congress, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has traditionally pointed out that this significant platform is the place to discuss the most fundamental and topical issues that define the trends and paths for further development of oncology, radiology, genetics and a number of related professional fields. “Such meetings and interactions contribute to the search for the most effective methods of combating and preventing dangerous diseases”, – he stressed. Mrs.Valentina Matvienko, Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, and Mr.Mikhail Murashko, Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, also sent greetings to the participants. The Minister noted that the development of oncology service is one of the priorities of the Russian state, and despite the pandemic, a large-scale modernization of the service is under way in the country.

During the opening ceremony the results of the election of the President of ADIOR CIS and Eurasia for the next 4 years were announced. By a unanimous decision of the Association’s members the incumbent President Prof. Andrey Kaprin was re-elected for a new term.

The guest of honor of the event was Irina Krasnopolskaya, Soviet and Russian journalist, publicist and columnist for Rossiyskaya Gazeta. Irina has devoted over 60 years of her professional life to medicine and has gained an unquestionable reputation in the scientific and academic communities. On 29 April Irina Krasnopolskaya will celebrate her 90th anniversary. The guests of the congress congratulated the journalist birthday on the forthcoming event.

The honorable tradition, initiated at the XI Congress in 2020 was to award outstanding oncologists with the Nikolay Trapeznikov medals. This year the award was handed to :

– Prof. Ivan Stilidi, Director of the N. Blokhin National Medical Center of Oncology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences ,

– Prof. Mirzagaleb Tillashaikhov, Director of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Oncology and Radiology, Republic of Uzbekistan,

– Dr. Sergey Polyakov, Director of the N.N. Alexandrov Republican Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus.

As part of the opening ceremony of the Congress the results of the Young Scientists Competition were announced. We remind that 119 works from 7 countries were submitted to the competition and after strict selection by the jury 19 participants whose reports were presented on the first day of the Congress made it to the final. The winners were E.Artemyeva (Russia, St. Petersburg), A.Satanova (Kazakhstan, Almaty), D. Djamshedov (Tajikistan, Dushanbe), I. Zherko (Belarus, Minsk). The special prize was also awarded to L.Yunusova (Uzbekistan, Tashkent). The winners received valuable prizes as well as travel-grants with an opportunity to receive professional training at the leading oncological centers in Russia and abroad.

The Congress continued its work until 29th April. It is a reminder, that more than 9000 specialists from 21 countries participated in the Congress. The 4-day scientific program, which includes 31 sections, featured more than 600 speakers and moderators. As part of the scientific program of the Congress, planned sections discusstd the regulatory aspects of national clinical guidelines, clinical trials in oncology, the impact of cancer services in the Covid-19, organizational issues in oncology, features of the work of patient non-profit organizations, as well as thematic symposiums on the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of all types of malignant tumors.

The next XIV Congress will be held in Tajikistan in 2024.
