CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE IS NOT A BARRIER TO TREATMENT FOR CANCER PATIENTS
It is unfortunately not uncommon for a patient to be diagnosed with cardiovascular problems in addition to the dreaded cancer diagnosis. In such a situation, even if the size of the mass and the stage of the malignant process allow effective treatment options to be offered, patients may be denied treatment due to the high risk of progression of another, no less formidable pathology.
People at risk include people with hypertension, overweight, diabetes, high cholesterol, patients with a family history of heart attack and stroke, and smokers. Timely identification of risk factors and associated diseases helps prevent the development of such serious complications as heart failure, heart attack and stroke.
“Due to the high prevalence of cardiovascular pathologies, as well as the ever-increasing frequency of detection of tumour diseases against the background of improved diagnostic techniques and increased life expectancy, there is a growing need for close cooperation between oncologists and cardiovascular surgeons,” comments Ilya Igolnikov, a cardiovascular surgeon of the department of radiosurgical methods of diagnosis and treatment at the A.Tsyb MRRC – the branch of the FSBI “National Medical Research Radiological Centre” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation . – Our Centre has accumulated many years of experience in diagnostics and treatment of patients with concomitant cardiovascular pathology, which makes it possible to provide comprehensive step-by-step treatment of two competing diseases at once. We eliminate the risks of cardiovascular disease and put the patient in the golden hands of our oncologists”.
The case of our patient Tatyana, who was diagnosed with rectal cancer and had a very favorable prognosis and required surgical treatment. She was diagnosed with rectal cancer, the prognosis was extremely favorable and surgical treatment was required.
However, a follow-up examination revealed a critical lesion in the arteries supplying blood to the brain, which required the immediate involvement of vascular surgeons. Learn more about this in our video.
