DENSITOMETRY — HIGH-TECH DIAGNOSTICS AT THE NATIONAL MEDICAL RESEARCH RADIOLOGICAL CENTRE
At the A. Tsyb MRRC – the branch of the National Medical Research Radiological Centre of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, a very important study for cancer patients is carried out: densitometry. Today, together with Alena Pukhalskaya, a radiologist from the Radiology Department of the A.Tsyb MRRC, we will explain how this procedure is carried out and what it can detect.
“Densitometry is a radiological examination that allows for a quick, safe and highly accurate assessment of bone mineral density and the risk of fractures in patients of different heights and body types. The main aim of the procedure is to detect a decrease in bone density, assess the risk of developing osteoporosis, its complications and the effectiveness of treatment,” – explains Alena Alexandrovna. According to modern clinical guidelines, two areas are examined to assess osteoporosis: the lumbar spine and the proximal (upper) part of the femur, preferably on both sides. During the examination, the patient lies on the table of the machine and is exposed to low-dose X-ray radiation. The entire procedure takes no more than 20–30 minutes, requires no special preparation and is completely painless.
Which oncology patients require regular monitoring?
Patients taking aromatase inhibitors Patients undergoing androgen deprivation therapy Patients who have had an oophorectomy Patients who have received radiation therapy “Of course, it should not be forgotten that osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases in the world. It is most often seen in women, who are most vulnerable during menopause: the level of estrogens decreases, whose function is to maintain the balance between the breakdown and restoration of bone tissue,” – emphasizes Alena Alexandrovna. Osteoporosis can develop at any age if certain risk factors are present: Smoking Low body mass index (BMI) Vitamin D deficiency Insufficient physical activity Poor diet and eating habits Early menopause The modern equipment installed at the Centre allows for a whole-body examination, including assessment of bone mineral density and precise ratios of fat, muscle, and bone tissue. This is particularly relevant for those who lead a healthy lifestyle and monitor their body composition.
