Russian Oncologists’ Congress in Kazan: Dialogue of Generations, Tough Decisions, and the Future of the Profession
On April 8, Kazan hosted the opening of the XIV Russian Oncologists’ Congress, themed this year as “Dialogue of Generations” to mark the 80th anniversary of Tatarstan’s oncology service.
The first day demonstrated the event’s scale: it brought together leading industry experts, healthcare organizers, related specialists, and media representatives.
The opening day’s program sparked extensive professional discussion—intensive, multifaceted, and practice-oriented. It began with a section on emergency care for cancer patients, featuring real clinical cases from Russian regions alongside international experience.
Emergency conditions in tumors of various locations were a key focus, covered in multiple sections. Experts detailed surgical tactics, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of postoperative complications.
A special emphasis was placed on the profession’s future. The “Training Personnel is Key” section addressed building a talent pool, specialist accreditation, modern education trends, and burnout factors. The discussion confirmed that oncology’s progress depends on systematic work with the medical community and new specialists.
A highlight was the anniversary section on pediatric oncology achievements. Experts presented key results and outlined future directions, stressing that progress hinges on new technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Oncogeriatrics—one of the fastest-growing fields—was also central. Participants analyzed differences in cancer progression across age groups and modern treatment approaches, highlighting personalized therapy and the need for interdisciplinary care.
The day also covered palliative care, symptomatic therapy, management of patients with comorbidities, skeletal metastases, lymphoproliferative diseases, and psychological support for cancer patients.
The scientific agenda extended beyond the main venue: Kazan specialty institutions hosted sections on patient organizations and nursing, underscoring modern oncology’s multidisciplinary nature.
A mobile Congress studio added value, with 12 live broadcasts today featuring top specialists discussing the most pressing topics.
Two more days await, packed with scientific sessions and key events, including the official opening ceremony.
