HEALING SOUNDS: NEW HORIZONS OF REHABILITATION AT THE NMRCC OF RADIOLOGY
Anti-tumor treatment is not only a medical process but also a serious psycho-emotional burden that directly affects therapy tolerance, recovery and the patient’s quality of life. At the National Medical Research Radiological Centre of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the possibilities of oncorehabilitation are consistently expanding, including scientifically based non-drug support methods. One such approach has become music therapy – a tool used not as a mood booster, but as part of a comprehensive approach to anxiety, pain and emotional exhaustion in patients.
“Modern medicine considers music as a powerful method of psychological intervention that can directly influence the physiological state of a patient”, – says Liana Mkrtchyan, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Head of the Rehabilitation and Recovery Technologies Department at the A. Tsyb MRRC. “Major studies have shown that music therapy has a beneficial effect on anxiety, depression, pain and general weakness in oncology patients, with its psychotherapeutic effect lasting up to 26 weeks and comparable to psychological therapy”.
That is why for over a year, cancer patients have been participating in dance, and more recently, in vocal therapy. They not only listen to music but also sing, regulating their breathing and restoring emotional balance.
“Music therapy is an innovative, scientifically grounded approach that makes the treatment process at the Centre more comfortable and holistic”,- emphasizes Liana Sirekanovna. “Integrative technologies, including dance-movement activities and music therapy, do not replace primary treatment, but serve as a bridge that helps patients go through this journey with fewer emotional losses and high social adaptation”.
