SPECIALISTS FROM NMRRC SAVED A YOUNG PATIENT WITH TUMOR DECAY
Alina, 36, came to theNational Medical Research Radiological Centre in a serious condition and was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. It all started when Alina noticed a small lump in her breast some time ago. Without paying due attention to this alarming symptom, she continued to lead the same old way of life, until the strongest piercing pains became her constant companion.
Alina recalls that she delayed going to the doctor until the last minute because she was afraid to hear the diagnosis. The mass in her breast continued to grow rapidly and, worst of all, to “expand” beyond the breast.
“As a rule, such situations are accompanied by severe pain, recurrent bleeding, tumor decay with a malodorous odor. The mammary gland acquires a purple-burgundy color, is severely deformed and increases in volume”, says Dmitry Nadinsky, a doctor-surgeon-oncologist of the Department of Radiosurgical Methods of Diagnosis and Treatment of A. Tsyb MRRC.
When the pain syndrome was no longer controlled by pills and the pain became unbearable, Alina was forced to seek medical help at her place of residence, but there they only spread their hands too late. The girl was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and offered palliative treatment to improve her quality of life. Her last hope was A. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre (MRRC) – the branch of the FSBI “National Medical Research Radiological Centre” (NMRRC) of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. After a thorough examination and tests, the girl was able to be offered treatment.
“It is really very difficult to help patients in such situations. But we were able to work out a treatment tactic and offer Alina to perform chemoembolization. This method allows to bring the chemo drug to the affected tissues in maximum concentration and to control bleeding from the tumor,” says Dmitry Olegovich.
Alina underwent several courses of chemoembolization, after which she got much better: the process stabilized, bleeding stopped, and the tumor decreased in volume. This allowed the doctors to perform a radical mastectomy (removal of the mammary gland together with the underlying fatty tissue, regional lymph nodes, as well as small or large pectoral muscles), and then the subsequent radiation therapy, and thus rid Alina of this terrible disease.
Since then, a year and a half has passed and the young woman’s condition has stabilized: “I am no longer afraid of doctors and regularly undergo medical examinations. Only now I realize how important it is not to waste precious time. The doctors of the Center have already given me a year and a half of life next to my beloved family and my children. I appreciate every moment of life and I am very grateful to my saviors!”
