SURGEONS OF THE NATIONAL MEDICAL RESEARCH RADIOLOGICAL CENTRE PERFORMED A COMPLICATED OPERATION TO REMOVE A CHEST TUMOR IN A YOUNG PATIENT

Eugene, 44, led a healthy lifestyle: he exercised and ate right. Over the past few months, he was bothered by unpleasant sensations in the area of his arm, which he wrote off as muscle pain after training. Over time, the man noticed a strange thickening, and the discomfort turned into severe pain.

Eugene independently went to the A. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre – the branch of the FSBI “National Medical Research Radiological Centre” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation , where the doctors conducted all the necessary examinations: according to CT scan results, there was a large tumor in the chest area, growing into the first and second ribs, as well as upwards, enveloping the neck and subclavian vessels. The biopsy results showed that the patient had chondrosarcoma.

“This disease rarely metastasizes, but its rapid growth affects all adjacent organs and tissues, neurovascular bundles, thus completely disrupting the natural functions of the body. The only adequate treatment in this situation was surgery,” says Grigory Afonin, acting head of the thoracic department of the A. Tsyba MRRC.

“Such operations belong to one of the highest categories of complexity, it is determined by the anatomy and involvement of those structures, which in a large variety are located in the area. For our patient we performed resection of the first and second ribs, long and painstakingly isolating the volumetric formation. Then we used nickelide-titanium mesh to close the defect. This will allow the man to fully restore his motor function and return to his previous way of life,” says Andrei Ryabov, Deputy General Director for Surgery at the National Medical Research Radiological Centre.

A few days after the operation, we talk to Eugene, who is full of strength and hope! The man wants to return to his former rhythm of life as soon as possible. And after some more time the good news came: the histology results confirm that the doctors were successful – R0 resection. This means that the operation was performed in a radical scope and the risks of local recurrence are minimized. Eugene is no longer in any danger.
