Colorectal Cancer Congress
The Second International Forum of Oncology and Radiology will be held in Moscow on September 23-27, 2019. The Colorectal Cancer Congress will be held within the framework of the ForLife Forum.
The moderator of the upcoming event, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Head of the Department of Radiation and Surgical Treatment of Diseases of the abdominal region of the A.F. Tsyba MRSC – branch of the FSBI “NMIC of Radiology” of the Ministry of Health of Russia Leonid Olegovich Petrov, told more about the topics of the upcoming event.
“Colon cancer is one of the most common diseases in developed countries. In Russia, about 50 thousand new cases are detected annually. At the same time, there is a slow, but steady growth. In terms of prevalence, this oncological disease is second only to lung cancer and breast cancer.
The life expectancy of colon cancer directly depends on the stage at which this disease is detected, as well as on how well the treatment tactics are chosen. For example, if colon cancer is detected at stages I or II, and the correct treatment is carried out, then the chance of recovery is about 80%. But, unfortunately, not all clinics have treatment approaches that meet international standards.
It must be remembered that the early stages of colorectal cancer are always asymptomatic. Therefore, the only chance to increase detection is widespread population screening, that is, colonoscopy or a test for hidden blood in the stool. In Russia, screening is not included in national programs, but a number of subjects of the country have implemented it and are using it at the regional level. The first colonoscopy should be performed at the age of 45-50 years (if there were no relatives who had colorectal cancer) or 10 years earlier (if there were relatives with colon cancer).
The maximum effectiveness of colorectal cancer treatment, first of all, depends on the stage at which the disease is detected. The earlier, the more effective. Modern methods of treatment, such as, for example, laparoscopic operations with the preservation of the sphincter apparatus, help to maintain a high quality of life. Today, with the use of modern gentle operations, not only the quality of life remains at a high level, but also patients who were considered hopeless 20 years ago have high chances of even recovery.”
