International Veterinary Doctor’s Day
Dear friends! Did you know that every year on the last Saturday of April, the Veterinarian’s Day is celebrated all over the world. It was established back in 2000 by the World Veterinary Association. However, this profession originated much earlier. People have always taken care of pets, protecting them from diseases and ailments. France is considered to be the historical homeland of veterinary medicine, it was there, in the 18th century, that the first school for doctors was opened, where they taught the treatment of animals. It was founded by decree of Louis XV to stop a terrible epidemic that is taking the lives of livestock.
It is not by chance that we are telling you about these significant dates, because the staff of the NMIC of Radiology of the Ministry of Health of Russia today employs 11 veterinarians who provide assistance to animals with an oncological diagnosis. As an independent structural subdivision of the P.A. Herzen Institute of Medical Research – a branch of the NMIC of Radiology of the Ministry of Health of Russia – the first Animal Oncology Clinic was established back in 2000. And, along with scientific and practical activities, the specialists of the clinic conducted outpatient admission of pets with suspected malignant neoplasms and other somatic diseases.
A little later, in 2018, at the initiative of the Director General of the NMIC of Radiology of the Ministry of Health of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrey Kaprin, another veterinary radiology clinic was opened at the site of the experimental radiological sector of the A.F. Tsyba MRSC, specializing in the treatment of animals using nuclear medicine technologies, primarily by radiation therapy methods. Today, the structural units are united into a single Center for Veterinary Oncology and Radiotherapy of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “NMIC of Radiology” of the Ministry of Health of Russia, where the full range of modern medical care for the diagnosis and treatment of animals with oncological diseases is provided.
In addition, the Center is the only one in the country where all possible types of sources of radioactive radiation (electrons, neutrons, gamma radiation, protons) are used to conduct radiation therapy for animals according to modern standards. And thanks to the installation of premium high-tech equipment here, treatment is carried out with minimal impact on healthy tissues and organs of animals.
An appointment for a consultation with the Center’s specialists is made by phone: 8 (495) 945-27- 53
