MRI vs CT scan: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Today we are going to understand one of the most frequent diagnostic questions: what is the difference between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT)? These methods seem similar, but actually work on different principles and are used in different cases, sometimes complementing each other. What are their key differences and what is important to know before the examination tells Elizaveta Sheberova, a radiologist of the Department of Radiation Diagnostics of the A. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre (MRRC) – the branch of the FSBI “National Medical Research Radiological Centre” (NMRRC) of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

“Both CT scan and MRI are painless procedures that allow visualization of tissues that are not visible in other diagnostic methods. The information obtained is interpreted by a radiologist to diagnose various pathologies and anomalies. MRI creates an accurate three-dimensional image of organs and better visualizes soft tissues, while CT is a layer-by-layer image of denser structures, for example, bones,” explains Elizaveta Viktorovna.

CT uses X-rays, which are accompanied by a certain radiation exposure to create detailed images. In contrast, MRI works on the basis of a powerful magnetic field, allowing visualization of soft tissues without harmful ionizing radiation.

“It is important to properly prepare for the research: for example, absolute contraindications to MRI are the presence of a pacemaker, ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator), metal prosthetic heart valves, some metal clips on the vessels of the brain, lungs, abdomen, metal objects (shrapnel, shot, metal shavings, bullets), ferromagnetic joint prostheses, electronic or metal implants of the inner ear, insulin pumps and nerve stimulators”, explains the specialist.

Many contraindications for MRI are due to its strong magnetic properties: they can interfere with electronic devices, displace, attract or heat metal objects in the body.

Unlike MRI, CT has fewer restrictions, but the study is contraindicated for pregnant women, also in CT with contrast it is important to make sure that you are not allergic to iodine-containing drugs, kidney failure, bronchial asthma.

CT exams last from 5 to 20 minutes, and MRI scans from 20 minutes to an hour.

You can make an appointment for examinations by indications through the contact center by phone: +7 495 150-11-22, +7 499 110-40-67, 8 800 250-87-00. We would also like to remind you that the A. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre (MRRC) offers a service for remote review of CT and MRI examinations.
