National Medical Research Radiological Centre united leading endocrinologists and oncologists from all over the country
Last Friday at the A.Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre, – branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution of the “National Medical Research Radiological Centre” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation hosted a conference “Innovations in the diagnosis and treatment of neoplasms of the thyroid and parathyroid glands.” The center was visited by leading oncologists, endocrinologists, surgeons and diagnosticians from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tomsk, Kazan and Orenburg.
“Thyroid diseases are a huge problem that mostly affects young people. This conference is very important for us, and we are grateful to everyone who came: honored surgeons and luminaries of science, as well as young specialists who are looking for themselves and to whom we can provide great support, because they are our future. Thyroid surgery has come a long way in recent years. And today we are fighting not only for the lives of our patients, but also for their quality, which is especially important,” said Andrey Kaprin, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, General Director of the National Medical Research Radiological Centre, opening the conference.
During the master class, Vyacheslav Polkin, head of the department of radiation and surgical treatment of head and neck diseases, A.Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre, performed the removal of a lobe of the thyroid gland along with a malignant tumor using a transoral endoscopic approach.
“The uniqueness of this technique lies in the absence of scars on visible areas of the skin, thanks to which we ensure a high quality of life for patients,” emphasized Vyacheslav Viktorovich. “We are also talking about safety, because we work with endoscopic equipment with high magnification, which allows us to visualize vital structures: the recurrent laryngeal nerve, the parathyroid glands. Maintaining quality of life is just as important to us as effectively treating the disease.”
At the same time, in the hall, participants could observe the progress of a robot-assisted surgical intervention using a behind-the-ear cervical approach, performed by Igor Reshetov, director of the L.L. Levshin Institute of Cluster Oncology, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Next, guests received the selection of unique clinical cases and practices: doctors talked about thyroid cancer during pregnancy and the possibilities of surgical intervention, features of treatment of children with hereditary forms of cancer, prospects for iodine therapy and alternatives to classical surgery. The conference ended with an active discussion of the most promising practices.
