National Medical Radiology Research Centre, NMRRC, welcomes participants of the International BRICS Expert Forum on Nuclear Medicine

The largest International BRICS Expert Forum on Nuclear Medicine, whose program includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, was dedicated to the development of nuclear technologies in the interests of medicine. It was held in Moscow and Obninsk on July 20 and 21 on the eve of Ministers of Health of the BRICS countries’ meeting in August this year.

More than 200 healthcare professionals-representatives of the largest research centers, enterprises and pharmaceutical companies that produce radioisotopes, RPh ( radiopharmaceuticals), shared their experience and discussed prospects for cooperation. During the two-day program, participants discussed the prospects of using radionuclide therapy for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, the development and production of innovative radiopharmaceutical medicines, the training of highly qualified personnel, and the development of the legislative framework at the national and international levels.

According to the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Murashko, the scientific potential of our countries allows us to implement breakthrough solutions in practice: “For example, the combination of immune and radiotherapy is one of the vectors that research centers in our countries are developing today. The Improvement of the medical care system, the investment of the nuclear medicine – that are  the priority issues in the Russian Federation, supported by the President of our country as well,” – has noted the Minister in his greeting speech to the audience.

The second day of the Forum was held at the A. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre, the branch of the FSBI NMRRC of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, which is rightfully considered the center of medical science in Russia, where nuclear medicine and radiology methods are used. A tour of the key divisions of the branch was held here especially for distinguished guests. The guests got acquainted with the first Nuclear Pharmacy in Russia, which was opened in early 2023 by the Department of radiation diagnostics and the line of installations presented there, as well as the Department of X-ray surgical methods of diagnosis and treatment, where Russian-made Radioactive pharmaceuticals for the treatment of malignant liver neoplasms, RPh, are successfully used today, as well as chronic synovitis of the knee joint.

Mr. Shapsha Valery, Governor of the Kaluga Region, welcomed the participants to A. Tsyb MRRC, and stressed that in addition to modern technologies for cancer diagnosis and treatment, the Center has many important and promising divisions, one of them is a nuclear pharmacy department, which creates radiopharmaceuticals for a specific patients by doctors order.

The Deputy Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, Sergey Glagolev, has also noted that “today the standards and requirements for the production of Radioactive pharmaceuticals,  quality and safety fully coincides with the BRICS standards, and therefore are close and understandable to our partners. We have transformed and got closer the possibility of using short-lived Radioactive pharmaceuticals because of the appropriate changes in the regulatory framework of nuclear pharmacies.”

Andrey Kaprin, Director General of the National Medical Radiology Research Centre of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, emphasized the special significance of holding the event at the site of the National Medical Radiology Research Centre: “Cancer is an international problem, not a political one. Oncological diseases do not choose their nationality or rank, everyone can find himself in “this” place. Therefore, we need to fight in such a way for not only to help our contemporaries, but also to pass on the best experience to our descendants. Therefore, all the steps that are being taken in this direction are very important. You can’t do everything at once, but to strive and move forward is our professional obligation and a common duty to people.”

(Also, in Obninsk) During this Forum an agreement on cooperation in the field of healthcare in the Kaluga Region was signed between the regional Government and the Federal State Budgetary Institution «National Medical Radiology Research Centre» of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, where the main emphasis are placed on creating conditions for the development of research projects, including the field of nuclear medicine.

The Forum was organized by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom” and the National Medical Radiology Research Centre of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.
