Oncologists of the Herzen Institute performed a complex operation to remove a huge liposarcoma

In the Moscow Scientific Research Oncological Institute named after P.A. Herzen, a branch of the FSBI “NMIC of Radiology” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, a team of surgeons performed a complex operation under the leadership of the Director General, chief freelance oncologist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrey Kaprin and Deputy Director General for Surgery Andrey Ryabov to remove a large retroperitoneal non–organ tumor. 

Patient Dmitry B. from Moscow has already undergone 5 operations to remove liposarcoma in the retroperitoneal space. The first one was made to him in 2011, the sixth one was carried out by oncologists of the Herzen Institute on February 10, 2020.
The peculiarity of this malignant tumor is the ability of its cells to a special disguise – they turn into fat cells. The frequency of its occurrence increases with age, reaching the highest level by the age of 60.  Most often, it is men who suffer from this disease. Liposarcomas can affect any part of the body, and often it is the retroperitoneal space.
The patient went to the institute in an extremely serious condition, the tumor was so large that it squeezed the arteries, organs of the gastrointestinal tract, cutting off the path to natural nutrition. The disease steadily progressed. He complained of general weakness, a sharp increase in the size of the abdomen in volume, constant pain, and inability to eat independently.
A consultation of doctors decided to remove the non-organ retroperitoneal tumor as the only option to help the patient.
The complexity of the operation was that repeated surgical intervention is always associated with the removal of a common adhesive process, besides, the patient had a disturbed anatomy of nearby organs, which the tumor squeezed, thereby blocking their work.
The operation lasted 12 hours.  The patient had all recurrent tumor nodes removed along with the right half of the colon, resection of the small intestine and left-sided hemicolectomy were performed. All other abdominal organs are preserved.  In total, the weight of the tumor was almost 12 kg.
Dmitry is still in intensive care, but will soon be transferred to the ward. We wish our patient a speedy recovery and good health!
