Patients with stoma are taught proper care
For a year now, on the basis of the P.A. Hertsen MNIOI and the A.F. Tsyba MRSC – branches of the NMIC of Radiology of the Ministry of Health of Russia, a Rehabilitation Center for stomatological patients has been operating, which is a structural subdivision of the abdominal department. The center was created to provide assistance to patients who had a stoma removed after performing surgery. The center employs real professionals – doctors and nurses with extensive work experience who have an individual approach to each patient and know exactly what kind of care should be after the diagnosis of a particular stoma.
A stoma is an artificial opening that creates a communication between the cavity of any organ (for example, intestines, trachea) and the environment. The purpose of its installation is the possibility of removing waste products through an artificially created path.
-The type of stoma depends entirely on the localization of the intervention and the place of removal, – says Ruslan Moshurov, head of the Rehabilitation Center for Stoma patients. – So the urostoma is an artificial surgical opening on the anterior abdominal wall. It is established in cases when urination is impossible in a natural way: due to a chronic disease, cancer, injury or abnormal development of this system. A special pocket is attached to the urostostome, which varies depending on the filling. The rehabilitation center for stoma patients helps from a psychological point of view to accept this fact and understand that this device, with proper care, does not cause problems. It does not pass a smell, is not transparent and can be invisible under clothes.
Gastrostoma – a special system for feeding into the stomach through the anterior abdominal wall – is installed for patients who cannot pass food through the esophagus due to various reasons – diseases, burns, injuries. The main indication for staging a stoma is stomach cancer.
A tracheostomy is an artificially created hole in the trachea. A special tube is inserted into the stoma, providing the possibility of proper breathing. The Department of Pathology of the head and neck under the supervision of Doctor of Medical Sciences Prof. is successfully engaged in this type of stom at the P. Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Institute. Polyakova A.P. Such a stoma is necessary for acute laryngeal stenosis as a result of the oncological process, the presence of foreign bodies, diphtheria, false croup, thermal or chemical burns; in conditions in which the drainage function is impaired, namely brain cancer, coma, asthma, insufficient blood circulation in the brain, severe traumatic brain injuries, myasthenia gravis, infections affecting the nervous system and much more.
A colostomy is an artificially created opening on the abdomen, which helps to remove feces from the body, bypassing the natural path. The cause of the violation of the natural course may be cancer of the colon or small intestine, anal canal, intestinal fistula, ulcerative colitis, injuries and other diseases.
One of the most common types of intestinal stomas is an ileostomy – an opening in the small intestine as a result of the formation of a fistula canal in the ileum.
We train patients both in self-care of stomas, and provide qualified nursing assistance in maintaining these devices in the correct position, processing them, checking the amount of contents, filling the so-called “pocket”, and much more. It should be noted that when dressing the stoma, blood can also be released from the intestinal mucosa, but do not worry, this phenomenon is considered the norm, since healing occurs naturally. Also, a small movement of the stoma, which is caused by our muscular movements, is taken as the norm.
