Russia and China have joined forces in the fight against cancer
On August 19, 2021, a teleconference between Russia and the People’s Republic of China on the treatment of stomach cancer took place on the basis of the FSUE “NMIC of Radiology” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. The event was attended by the heads and leading experts of the NMIC of Radiology and the Oncology Clinic of Peking University. The organization of this landmark event became possible thanks to the signed agreement on cooperation in the field of oncology between the Centers.
During the virtual meeting, experts discussed promising areas and technologies for the treatment of stomach cancer. First of all, it was about minimally invasive surgery of cancer of the proximal stomach and cardioesophageal junction. In addition, the experts exchanged experiences, analyzed the most complex clinical cases and made suggestions for further cooperation.
The experience of Chinese and Russian colleagues in the treatment of stomach cancer is of particular interest to both countries. The fact is that clinics have accumulated not only one of the world’s largest experiences in the treatment of this type of ZNO, but unique technologies have been developed and introduced into clinical practice.
Thus, the president and chief physician of the clinic, Professor Ji Jiafu, is the founder and popularizer of Chinese gastric cancer surgery and postoperative treatment standards, as well as the first Chinese expert who became chairman of the International Stomach Cancer Society. On his initiative, the Chinese Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery Union and the first cancer biobank were established, which collected samples of more than 11,000 cases of the disease in the country.
Gastric cancer treatment technologies, which are currently used in NMIC radiology, are also of particular interest to the PRC. The Center has a rich clinical experience that allows performing operations unique in nature and scope in complex clinical situations, including operations for locally advanced tumors, for local recurrence of malignant neoplasms and distant metastases, as well as repeated operations after trial or non-radical interventions. On its basis, there is a “Center for the treatment of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis”, where HIPEC and PIRAS therapy technologies unique to our country are used.
In order to remain at the forefront of oncology, clinics are constantly looking for opportunities for domestic and international academic exchange and cooperation.
Opening the teleconference, Andrey Kaprin, Director General of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “NMIC of Radiology” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, stressed: “We see the desire of Chinese partners to cooperate with our Center, with our experts, and familiarity with our technologies. Oncology is the science of the eternal fight against cancer and I thank our colleagues for such an initiative.”
