Specialists at the Research Institute of Urology helped an oncology patient preserve her ability to become a mother
Doctors at the National Medical Research Radiological Center of the Ministry of Health of Russian Federation helped a young patient overcome a severe oncological disease, and 14 years later, they performed another operation, preserving her opportunity to become a mother in the future.
The patient first came to the attention of oncologists at the NMRRC in 2012. At that time, she faced a highly complex treatment regimen for an advanced oncological condition.
«The patient was admitted to our Center’s abdominal surgery department with a severe diagnosis: stage IV cancer of the sigmoid colon with metastases to the liver»,- recalls Leonid Petrov, PhD, Head of the Department of Visceral Surgery and Oncology at the N. Lopatkin. Scientific Research Institute of Urology and Interventional Radiology. «The extent of the tumor spread required extensive surgical intervention, including the removal of affected tissues and parts of the abdominal organs. At that point, surgery offered the patient the best chance for successful treatment. After the surgical stage, we proceeded with chemotherapy».
Given the widespread nature of the tumor process, the prognosis was extremely serious. However, this patient’s story took a different turn.
Thanks to comprehensive treatment, the doctors’ expertise, and the patient’s active involvement in the treatment process, a long‑term remission was achieved. For 14 years, the disease did not recur. Throughout this period, the woman remained under regular medical supervision.
In 2026, the patient sought medical help again at the NMRRC. She was experiencing pain in the adnexal area and menstrual cycle disorders. Given her oncological history, the doctors’ primary task was to rule out a recurrence of the previously treated disease.
Examinations revealed a malignant tumor in one of the ovaries. The medical team faced a challenging task: to provide the necessary oncological treatment while preserving the young woman’s reproductive potential as much as possible.
«We carried out a comprehensive examination, detected the ovarian tumor at an early stage, and performed surgery to remove the affected organ», – says the patient’s attending physician, PhD Sergei Anpilogov. «The removed tissues were sent for immunohistochemical testing. The results helped clarify the nature of the tumor process. We were able to completely remove the neoplasm. At the same time, we preserved the uterus and the second ovary so that the patient would retain the opportunity to fulfill her reproductive plans in the future».
An extended medical board meeting will be held soon to determine the further treatment strategy. It is possible that drug therapy may be required. Over the years of follow‑up, we have seen how responsible and reliable a partner in fighting the disease this patient can be. She pays close attention to the doctors’ recommendations, which is especially important in long‑term and complex treatment.
