Speech therapy school at the National Medical Research Oncological Centre: the first distance learning session for patients after head and neck surgeries
Last Friday, the first remote group speech therapy class was held at the A. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre (MRRC) – the branch of the National Medical Research Radiological Centre (NMRRC) of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, for patients in need of rehabilitation after surgical treatment of head, neck and thyroid tumors, as well as after interventions in the area of the neurovascular bundle of the neck.
The class was conducted by Regina Boykacheva – medical speech therapist of the Medical Rehabilitation and Restorative Technologies Department of the A. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre (MRRC), and Marina Buyakova – oncologist, medical rehabilitologist of the Medical Rehabilitation and Restorative Technologies Department of the A. Tsyb MRRC.
The master class began with training in light self-massage of the face, neck, lips and tongue to warm up the muscles. Next, the patients learned breathing and articulation exercises, phonetic rhythmics and ways of facial taping for paresis.
“These exercises will help patients regain clarity and quality of speech, as well as develop motor functions of the face and jaw. We plan to hold rehabilitation master classes on a regular basis. It is important for our patients not only to receive high-tech treatment, but also to fully return to their previous quality of life – this is what we do in our Department of Medical Rehabilitation and Restorative Technologies at the A. Tsyb MRRC,” emphasizes Liana Mkrtchyan, Head of the Department.
We suggest everyone to join such a useful speech therapy session. To view the video, please scroll through the carousel.
