Stomach cancer is not a sentence!

The Center for the Treatment of Carcinomatosis for the most severe patients, including those with peritoneal metastases, is successfully working at the NMRRC of the Ministry of Health of Russian Federation.

The main feature and, let’s not hide, the pride of the Center is the use of a unique method of intra-abdominal aerosol chemotherapy – PIPAC

The essence of this method is the irrigation of the intraperitoneal space with a hot solution of a chemotherapy using an original injector created and patented by the specialists of the National Medical Research Radiological Center.

“Peritoneal carcinomatosis has long been considered an incurable malignant disease, and such patients were doomed to fade in a short time,” says candidate of medical sciences, head of the thoracoabdominal department of P.Hertsen, Vladimir Khomyakov. – However, modern technologies have enabled us to provide effective assistance to this category of patients.

To date, we use a number of innovative technologies to treat such patients, in particular, local chemotherapy – intra-abdominal aerosol chemotherapy under pressure. The method allows you to create high concentrations in the peritoneum and in tumor foci.

We have a patient who was diagnosed with common stomach cancer and had a life expectancy of one month. We have taken him for treatment since February 2022, and since then we have observed the positive effect of the combination of ongoing drug therapy and systemic intra-abdominal chemotherapy.

Currently, the patient is on maintenance therapy in the form of repeated sessions of intra-abdominal aerosol chemotherapy.

Peritoneal carcinomatosis is one of the most formidable options for the progression of a number of oncological diseases. Carcinomatosis is a form of metastasis in which tumor cells spread along the inner lining of the anatomical cavity (abdominal or pleural) and form small nodules on it, the so-called disseminations.

In most cases, its occurrence implies stage IV of the disease, and it is associated with an unfavorable prognosis for the patient. Treatment of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis is one of the most difficult tasks in oncology.

Most often it develops in malignant neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system and female reproductive organs. For example, with stomach cancer, lung cancer, cancer of the colon and small intestine, ovarian cancer, mucinous tumors of the appendix, mesothelioma of the peritoneum or pleura, pancreatic cancer, sarcoma of the abdominal cavity (sarcomatosis).

According to statistics, peritoneal carcinomatosis occurs in 20-35% of patients with oncopathology: in 40% of cases, this complication is formed with tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, in 30% with ovarian cancer (moreover, at the time of verification of the diagnosis of ovarian cancer, the vast majority of patients already have site of peritoneal injury).
