“SURGERY REQUIRED IMMEDIATELY!” SVO PARTICIPANT SAVED FROM AMPUTATION AT THE NMRRC

In May of this year, Boris, a participant in the SVO, suffered a shrapnel wound to his right thigh, which damaged the artery in his lower limb. He received emergency care at the Podolsk military hospital and was advised to see local doctors.

Being a native of Obninsk, Boris immediately made an appointment with a vascular surgeon at the A.Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre, – branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution of the “National Medical Research Radiological Centre” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. The doctors thoroughly examined the soldier. “We immediately saw that the blood supply to his leg was very weak, and with each passing day, the risk of losing the limb was increasing.

The vessel wasn’t blocked, but a cavity filled with blood had formed within it. From there, blood clots were emerging, and the intima, the inner layer of the artery, was peeling away. We decided to operate immediately!” says Vladimir Iofik, a vascular surgeon at the Radiation Injury Department of the A. Tsyb MRRC.

Vascular and endovascular surgeons performed a two-stage surgical procedure in the angiographic operating room:

“First, we performed a classic open surgery to remove the aneurysm (an expansion of the blood vessel wall that could have ruptured and led to massive bleeding).

At the second stage, we minimally invasively eliminated the consequences of the injury our patient had sustained,” explains Ilya Igolnikov, a vascular and endovascular surgeon from the X-ray Surgery Department of the A. Tsyb MRRC.

The hybrid operating room, equipped with advanced technology, allowed the specialists to perform all the necessary procedures at once, significantly reducing the time of the surgery and its invasiveness.

Today, Boris is already mobile, walking actively, and all the functions of his injured limb have been fully restored. He never stops thanking his doctors for giving him the chance to return to duty after the injury and reunite with his comrades.
