THE NATIONAL MEDICAL RESEARCH RADIOLOGICAL CENTRE IS SUCCESSFULLY STANDARDISING THE METHOD OF RADIOEMBOLISATION
Specialists from the A. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre (MRRC) – the branch of the National Medical Research Radiological Centre of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation — performed the first liver radioembolisation procedures at the N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Centre of Oncology (Saint Petersburg).
The operations were made possible thanks to the experience of the team from Obninsk: Valery Kucherov, Head of the Radiology Surgery Department at the A. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Centre (MRRC) – the branch of the National Medical Research Radiological Centre (NMRRC) of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, arrived in Saint Petersburg to personally share his expertise and perform the procedure together with local colleagues. Two radioembolisations were successfully carried out using domestic microspheres based on the yttrium-90 radionuclide.
«We are pleased to support our colleagues in introducing this high-tech treatment method into clinical practice», – noted Valery Vladimirovich. «We have been using it for seven years, and the results confirm its effectiveness, especially when traditional methods are no longer effective».
Since 2025, liver radioembolisation has officially been included in Russian clinical guidelines and has become available to patients under the high-tech medical care (HTMC) programme, allowing treatment to be provided free of charge for our patients. Radioembolisation is used for inoperable liver tumours, including metastases of colorectal cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma and other liver tumours, when surgery is not possible and systemic therapy is insufficiently effective. «The method involves targeted administration of radioactive microspheres into the vessels supplying the tumour. This allows a high dose of radiation to be delivered directly to the tumour while minimally affecting healthy liver tissue»,- emphasises Valery Vladimirovich.
Most patients who have undergone the procedure at the NMRRC report good tolerance and a pronounced antitumour effect. When combined with systemic therapy, lasting remissions are achieved, even in patients at advanced stages of the disease. A consultation with a doctor — an endovascular surgeon at the Centre’s outpatient clinic — is required to determine the indications for this treatment method.
