Carotid artery surgery for atherosclerosis was performed for the first time at the A.F. Tsyba MRSC
A patient from the Kaluga region was diagnosed with ischemic lesion of the cerebral vessels at her place of residence. By her 70s, she had already suffered three strokes. In order to avoid a relapse of another – 4 strokes, she turned to the MRSC named after A.F. Tsyba for medical help.
As a result of an additional examination, it was found that the patient’s narrowing of the lumen of the internal carotid arteries is more than 80 percent, which confirmed the high risk of another stroke with severe consequences up to the onset of death.
Despite the fact that this disease is not a profile for the MRSC named after A.F. Tsyba, a consultation of doctors decided to conduct the first carotid endarterectomy at the Center.
This surgical intervention makes it possible to restore the lumen of the carotid arteries with their atherosclerotic lesion, which in turn is an effective method of preventing stroke and reducing its consequences (paresis, paralysis) by restoring blood flow through the affected vessels.
The successful operation was made possible thanks to the availability of modern extra-class equipment and the well-coordinated work of the operating team of doctors: angiosurgeon, Ph.D. V.V. Iofik, head of the department V.A. Korotkov, heads of the anesthesiology and resuscitation service -MD, Professor A.L. Potapov, Ph.D. V.N. Derbugov and other employees The center.
Taking into account the fact that there are a lot of patients with carotid artery lesions and various vascular diseases of the brain, a new type of medical care has appeared in the A.F. Tsyba MRSC – carotid endarterectomy, which is carried out under the compulsory medical insurance program (CHI).
