A unique operation on the mammary gland was performed at the MRSC named after A.F.Tsyba.
For the first time in the world, Russian radiologists of the A.F. Tsyba MRSC performed alpha-emitter brachytherapy for inoperable metastatic breast cancer.
On November 28, 2019, an operation on alpha-emitter brachytherapy of inoperable metastatic breast cancer was performed for the first time in the world in the framework of the international scientific protocol at the A.F. Tsyba MRSC – a branch of the FSBI “NMIC of Radiology” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.
For its implementation in Russia came the world’s experts in the field of brachytherapy, our foreign colleagues: the author of the use of alpha-particles in Oncology Professor ion Keisari (Israel), chief medical officer of the manufacturer of the microsources Alpha-TAU Robert Benjamin ( Israel), Professor Razvan Galalae (Germany). Under his leadership, a unique operation was performed, which has no analogues in the world.
It is not by chance that the MRSC A.F.Tsyba, which is part of the powerful oncocluster of the FSBI “NMIC of Radiology” of the Ministry of Health of Russia and has extensive experience in using the brachytherapy method, was chosen as a platform for such a large-scale and promising experiment.
The unique technique developed on the basis of the destructive effect of alpha particles on cancer cells has already been used in other locations, in particular, head and neck tumors. Their main difference from other known radiations is that alpha particles not only destroy the tumor, but also contribute to the development of protective properties of the immune system.
– We hope that this method will allow not only to save the lives of patients with advanced forms of breast cancer, but also to get to such formidable diseases as pancreatic cancer, – Professor Caesari said before the operation.- We express our great gratitude to your entire team and in particular – To Academician Andrey Kaprin, Director General of the NMIC of Radiology, and Professor Sergey Ivanov, Director of the MRSC named after Tsyba, for the opportunity to work here in Russia on such an interesting project within the framework of an international scientific protocol in which more than two dozen countries participate.
Three years ago, a special group of clinicians implementing and studying various ways of using brachytherapy was created at the A.F. Tsyba MRSC, consisting of A. A. Obukhov, N. B. Borysheva, V. A. Biryukov, who took part in this unique operation. It lasted four hours and was successful. In two weeks, the patient will have the introducers removed, through which the alpha particles were delivered to the tumor. The result of their impact will be visible in a month. The rest should be done by the body itself: to develop protective mechanisms to combat remote metastases.
– Our team worked as a single well-coordinated organism, like an orchestra, – Professor Galalae said after the operation.- We are delighted with the level of training and professionalism of our colleagues from the MRSC named after Tsyba. Everyone knew their role perfectly and skillfully interacted with the entire team of doctors.
Together with you, we have opened a new page in our common fight against malignant neoplasms and I am sure that this will give very good results.
