WHAT CAN ULTRASOUND REVEAL ABOUT MEN’S HEALTH?

Health is often taken for granted until the first alarming “signals” appear. However, modern medicine allows us to look inside, identify hidden threats, and prevent their consequences long before symptoms arise. One such method is ultrasound diagnostics, a key tool for understanding what’s happening within the body, even when everything seems fine on the outside.

Advancements in technology have made this diagnostic method even more precise, enabling the detection of diseases at their earliest stages. What can ultrasound reveal about men’s health? How should you prepare for the examination, and what body signals should never be ignored? Let’s explore this with expert Georgy Kirguev, an ultrasound diagnostics physician at N. Lopatkin Scientific Research Institute of Urology and Interventional Radiology – branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution of the “National Medical Research Radiological Centre” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

“Typically, we examine the bladder, prostate gland, seminal vesicles, visible sections of the rectum, and all pelvic areas accessible for ultrasound visualization,” notes Georgy Albertovich.

Annual examinations can serve as a preventive measure that helps maintain health.

When should you consider an ultrasound?

Here are some symptoms that should not be ignored:

  • Blood in the urine;
  • Pelvic pain;
  • Difficulty or frequent urination.

“If such symptoms arise, it’s crucial not to delay visiting a doctor. These signs may indicate serious conditions that require immediate attention,” emphasizes Dr. Kirguev.

However, you don’t need to wait for alarming signals. Even if you feel fine, regular preventive check-ups and tests can help you avoid many health issues.

How is the procedure performed?

Pelvic ultrasound can be conducted using two methods:

  1. Transabdominally (through the abdomen): a less invasive method but not always sufficiently accurate.
  2. Transrectally (through the rectum): provides detailed imaging of the organs, which is particularly important for diagnosing prostate cancer.

“For transrectal ultrasound, patients need to empty their bowels in advance. We recommend an enema and avoiding foods that cause gas – such as black bread, vegetables, and legumes – the day before the exam,” advises Georgy Kirguev.

Better preparation leads to more accurate results: excessive gas can reduce the quality of visualization.

Modern technologies in diagnostics

Today, ultrasound is more than just “an image on a screen.” At the National Medical Research Radiological Centre, advanced methods like fusion biopsy are used, combining ultrasound and MRI data for maximum diagnostic accuracy.

“Our equipment is equipped with a full range of modern technologies, enabling not only accurate diagnoses but also the prevention of dangerous diseases,” adds Dr. Kirguev.

Don’t underestimate the importance of preventive examinations. A pelvic ultrasound is your chance to detect hidden threats at their earliest stages when treatment is most effective.
