Treatment of liver tumors by radioembolization
NMIC of Radiology of the Ministry of Health of Russia is the only Center in the Russian Federation where the method of radioembolization is used in the treatment of liver cancer and liver metastases using Russian-made radiopharmaceuticals. This method allowed a large number of patients to either permanently get rid of, or take control of the tumor process in the liver.

- Unique application experience
- Minimally invasive technology
- Treatment according to the VMP quota
- Patients from anywhere in Russia, near and far abroad
Radioembolization is used in the treatment of primary liver tumors, liver metastases in tumors of other localizations, for example, colorectal cancer. Also, radioembolization is used as palliative care when it is impossible to completely cure cancer, but the method helps to slow down the growth of the tumor, and also helps to alleviate the symptoms of the disease, thereby improving the quality of life of the patient. In addition, radioembolization is suitable for those patients who cannot undergo surgery or liver transplantation. Radioembolization is often used in combination with other methods of treatment, for example, with chemotherapy to destroy cancer cells as much as possible.
All about radioembolization
Conducting radioembolization
Radioembolization is carried out by highly qualified specialists – X-ray surgeons. To visualize the arteries of the upper abdominal cavity, an initial angiogram is performed. Then a thin wire mesh is inserted into the arteries of the stomach and duodenum 12 to protect the vessels from possible ingress of microspheres into them. Then, under X-ray control, a catheter is inserted through the skin, which moves through the femoral artery into the vessels of the liver. After placing the catheter in the branches of the hepatic artery feeding the tumor, microspheres are injected into it, into which a radionuclide drug is injected. Radioembolization takes place on an outpatient basis, however, in special cases, the patient needs a hospital for one day. The procedure lasts within an hour, with the use of local anesthesia.
Recommendations to patients
The patient may have post-embolization syndrome. Nausea, vomiting, fever, slight fever, drowsiness and weakness. The most common side effect is pain caused by blocking blood flow to the tumor. In these cases, the pain is eliminated with the help of painkillers. After 3-5 days after the radioembolization, the side effects disappear, but if they persist, you should consult your doctor. It is very important to exclude contacts with other people within a week after the procedure, since the patient is a source of radiation from a radioactive source. It is not recommended that the patient sleep in the same bed with his spouse, use public transport, be near children and pregnant women.
Branches and departments where tumors and liver metastases are treated by radioembolization
Department of X-ray Surgical Methods of Diagnosis and Treatment
The Department of X–ray Surgical Methods of Diagnosis and Treatment of the A.F. Tsyba MRSC – a branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “NMIC of Radiology” of the Ministry of Health of Russia uses the latest methods of treatment of tumors and diseases of the cardiovascular system
How do I sign up for treatment?
Patient’s route
To resolve the issue of treatment tactics, you need to apply for a full-time consultation with an oncologist at the polyclinics of the branches: P.A. Herzen MNIOI or A.F. Tsyba MRNC.
The initial consultation will be free by appointment through the information centers of the NMIC Radiology branches. Next, the doctor prescribes (if necessary) further examinations, which, according to the CHI, it is possible to pass at the place of residence
The decision on hospitalization, the issuance of quotas for treatment by radiation or proton therapy is made by a consultation of doctors, which is appointed by an oncologist at the initial appointment.
Phone numbers for making an appointment for an initial appointment with an oncologist:
MNIOI named after P.A. Herzen – +7 495 150 11 22;
MRSC named after A.F. Tsyba – +7 484 399 30 31; +7 800 250 87 00
Documents required for face-to-face consultation at the Center:
- compulsory medical insurance policy;
- passport;
- an extract from the medical history with a description of the operation performed;
- cytological preparations;
- histological preparations (glasses, paraffin blocks);
- the results of recent examinations, an MRI disk.
Additionally, we inform you that correspondence consultations are not held at the NMIC of Radiology.
